SIX WEEKS TO THANKSGIVING: THE REEFER TURN STARTS NOW — INTO THE TIGHTEST BASE MARKET IN YEARS.

Holiday food and CPG freight starts staging in mid-October, and reefer rejections historically run 1.5–2x dry van into the holiday. This year the turn lands on a 10.93 load-to-truck base. Plus: the tape beat DAT's forecast, and UPS's 100,000-hire tell.

The Top Story

THANKSGIVING IS NOVEMBER 26. THE REEFER MARKET DECIDES YOUR NEXT SIX WEEKS.

Mid-October is when holiday food, beverage, and CPG freight starts staging — and when reefer rejections historically decouple from dry van, typically running 1.5–2x van rejection rates into the holiday. Every year, same pattern. What's different is the base this turn lands on: load-to-truck at 10.93 versus 6.64 a year ago, OTRI at 14.1% versus 4.75% a year ago, equipment posts down 25.8% year over year, and the structural driver hole from the March CDL rule intact until at least Q1 2027. The seasonal squeeze is arriving on top of a structural one.

The reefer fleet is the market's swing capacity. When it pivots to food, dry van tightens behind it — reefer-capable trucks stop covering van freight, and the spillover hits van rates precisely when the tape is already printing $2.25/mi and rising. That's the mechanism that turns a produce-and-protein story into everyone's problem. If you ship ambient freight and think the reefer turn isn't your fight, check what hauled your loads last November.

The math on waiting is ugly. Reefer-dependent shippers who hold for the November tender wall will pay spot premiums into the tightest holiday market in years — and this base market has no slack to absorb a late scramble. The pre-tender window is the next two weeks, not the next six. Tender the full holiday cycle now: turkey, sides, beverage, and the CPG surge behind it. Dedicated reefer capacity committed by October 24 is insurance priced in cents. The same capacity bought the week of November 16 is priced in dollars.

Assessment

ASSESSMENT: The reefer turn is calendar-certain; the base market makes it expensive. Pre-tender the full holiday cycle and lock dedicated reefer capacity by October 24 — after that, you're buying the squeeze at spot.

The reefer fleet is the market's swing capacity. When it pivots to food, everyone's rates move — whether you ship frozen or not.

THE TAPE BEAT THE FORECAST: VAN PRINTS $2.25 — AND DAT LIFTED ITS CALL TO $2.24

The head-fake thesis needed rates to roll over. Instead, dry van linehaul averaged $2.25/mi for the week ending October 3 — up 12 cents week over week, up 33.5% year over year. And the forecaster moved toward the market: DAT's 35-day model went from $2.14 in late September to $2.24, inside a band of $2.17 to $2.31. The bear case is now three cents above the old midpoint.

When the forecast chases the tape upward, the 'wait and save' math collapses: maximum modeled downside is roughly eight cents, upside runs through $2.31 — before the reefer turn pulls van capacity sideways. The WK41 trigger stands, but the burden of proof has flipped. It now takes two consecutive prints below $2.20 to justify holding awards.

UPS HIRES 100,000 — FOR THE VOLUME IT WANTS, NOT THE VOLUME YOU HAVE

UPS announced 100,000 seasonal hires on October 7, targeting a ninth straight on-time peak. Headline reads like business as usual. It isn't. This headcount staffs a network that deliberately shed 3.3% of volume to exit low-margin e-commerce, while FedEx runs peak through 17 fewer DCs under Network 2.0. Flat hiring on a smaller footprint means capacity concentrates around the freight these carriers chose to keep — healthcare, automotive, premium B2B.

The per-package peak fees landing October 25 are the visible tax. The invisible one is an allocation you assumed and never confirmed. If your profile looks like the freight UPS exited, assume you are the flex, not the base — and get commitments in writing before Thanksgiving week.

The Orders

Week 42 · Three Urgent — Three on Watch
1
Urgent
Pre-tender Thanksgiving reefer volume by October 24

Reefer rejections historically run 1.5–2x dry van into the holiday, and this year's base market is 10.93 load-to-truck. Tender the full holiday food/CPG cycle and lock dedicated reefer capacity in the next two weeks — not the next six.

2
Urgent
Convert spot lanes to contract before the reefer spillover

The tape printed $2.25, DAT's bear case is $2.17, and the reefer turn will pull van capacity sideways from here. Maximum modeled savings from waiting is ~8 cents against dimes of upside — lock awards on your highest-volume van lanes now.

3
Urgent
Get parcel allocations in writing before October 25

100,000 UPS hires staff a deliberately smaller network — expect caps, not just fees, when per-package charges start. Confirm written volume commitments and contingency carriers (DHL, regionals) before Thanksgiving week.

4
Watch
Keep the kill switch armed

The trigger flips only on evidence: two consecutive weekly prints below $2.20 pause remaining awards for two weeks. One soft print is noise — don't let a single Tuesday number unwind the plan.

5
Watch
Audit fuel surcharge tables against the new diesel base

Diesel printed $6.20 on October 5 — down 18 cents from the September 21 peak of $6.53, but roughly 85 cents above August. Verify your FSC schedules reset off current DOE weekly prints, not stale brackets.

6
Watch
Budget 2027 contracts for input-cost pass-through

ISM prices paid jumped 6.8 points to 77.9 in September while the PMI held at 54.5 — a ninth month of expansion. Carriers will carry that cost pressure into 2027 asks; build it into bid-season targets now.
